Power bleaching, also known as in in-office-bleaching, is a medicinal procedure which whitens teeth substantially in very little time by using a special LED lamp.
Power bleaching costs CHF 490. For best results, we recommend going to the dental hygienist and for a check-up before treatment.
It depends on several factors for how long your teeth stay white. Avoid highly teeth-staining foods and hold back on coffee, tea, tobacco and red wine. Optimize your daily oral hygiene and visit the dental hygienist regularly.
You’ll receive a list of recommendations after your power bleaching. If you follow these, the whiteness of your teeth should last for one to two years. Since the whiteness will eventually fade, you can always repeat the procedure.
First, we position a cheek retractor, then we cover your mucous membranes and gums with a light-curing paste and isolate your teeth. In a next step, we brush your teeth with a hydrogen-peroxide-gel and light them with the power bleaching LED lamp for 15 minutes.
Depending on the desired shade, this cycle is repeated for up to four times. After each cycle, the hydrogen-peroxide-gel is renewed. We take pictures before and after treatment for documentation and evaluation purposes. Power bleaching takes about an hour.
During treatment, you’ll wear a cheek retractor, which safely holds your cheeks and lips apart. We cover your mucous membranes and gums completely with rubber dam gel to protect them from injuries.
Patients wear protective goggles during power bleaching with the appropriate filter to shield the eyes.
For an optimal result of power bleaching, we recommend going to the dental hygienist and for a check-up before treatment.
Carious teeth, dental infections or gum disease must be treated before power bleaching. Also, leaking or insufficient fillings have to be replaced beforehand.
Power bleaching does NOT whiten artificial teeth, crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays, onlays, overlays, composite fillings or other restorative materials. These have to be replaced after power bleaching to match the color.
Spotty discolorations caused by tetracycline (or fluorosis) can only be whitened partially, if at all. Further procedures may be necessary to treat these.
During the first 24 to 48 hours after a power bleaching you may experience hightened sensitivity or slight pain in your teeth. This is normal and should abate after two days. In very few cases, highly sensitive patients may experience the symptoms for longer.
In cases of sensitive teeth, exposed root surfaces or dentin, untreated carious lesions, fissures, abfractions, loose fillings, insufficient reconstructions, lesions of the mucous membrane or other pathologies, hydrogen-peroxide-gel can enter the teeth. This can lead to overly sensitive teeth or intense toothache. A pulpal reaction and/or devitalization of the tooth cannot be ruled out. That’s why we advise you to treat any existing pathologies before power bleaching.
If the protective cover is leaky and irritant hydrogen-peroxide-gel reaches the pulp, mucous membranes or lips, lesions may occur. This can be slightly painful but usually heals quickly.
A different method of dental whitening is home bleaching. This involves customized trays for your teeth. You fill these at home with a less concentrated gel and wear them for several hours (four to eight hours a day), usually during the night. This bleaching method is especially suitable for patients with sensitive teeth or patients who want to prevent sensitive teeth. Home bleaching takes two to four weeks.
Another, more invasive method involves ceramic or synthetic restoration. This type of therapy is much more costly and complex. Also, it usually means a loss of healthy tooth structure. The advantage of this method lies in its durability: The color will hardly change over time and additionally, slight corrections can be made to the position of the teeth during treatment.
